August 22, 2001 Kids 'n Kamp to Sponsor First Gold Ribbon Rally in Columbus COLUMBUS, Ohio (Aug. 22, 2001) - In recognition of Childhood Cancer Month, Kids 'n Kamp, a Columbus nonprofit organization that provides support for children and families affected by childhood cancer, will sponsor its first Gold Ribbon Rally on the Ohio Statehouse lawn, Friday, Sept. 7, at noon. In addition to providing a public venue for recognizing and supporting children affected by cancer, the rally will celebrate Governor Bob Taft's recent declaration of the month of September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in Ohio. Honored guest and Congresswoman Deborah Pryce, who lost her daughter to cancer, will speak about the need for increased awareness of and funding for childhood cancer research. The rally also will feature speakers from Children's Hospital, Mayor Coleman's office, local cancer patients and survivors, and a special tribute from the Wellington School's fourth grade choir. The event emcee will be Beverly Circone, who founded Kids 'n Kamp and has served as its executive director since 1982. "It is important for caring communities like Columbus to show support for those whose lives have been affected by childhood cancer," said Circone. "The more awareness we have, the more we can help these courageous children and their families." Kids 'n Kamp provides social, educational and emotional support for Ohio children and their families who are dealing with childhood cancer. The organization serves nearly 300 families through its camps and family social activities, parent and sibling support groups, tutoring and counseling services, scholarships, and financial support and gifting programs. Kids 'n Kamp is funded strictly by donations from businesses and individuals. The Kids 'n Kamp Columbus rally will be held in conjunction with Childhood Cancer Gold Ribbon Days in Washington D.C. on Sept. 12-15, a series of events created by Congresswoman Pryce and several cancer-related organizations, including the National Childhood Cancer Foundation (NCCF). The focus of the Gold Ribbon Days is to raise awareness among policymakers and the public that cancer is the number one killer of children and young adults. The activities attract researchers, caregivers, legislators, cancer patients and survivors from across the nation to actively advocate for policies that would be of the greatest benefit to patients, survivors, families and caregivers.
